On the key fob transmitter, do you mean that it does not work even with a new battery when right next the car or do you mean that when you are a little ways away, then the car does always respond -- even though you are relatively close? The combined key/remote unit has an abysmally short range which is compounded by a short antenna for the receiver in the car that is low, down between the seats; i.e., shielded by the car body from line of sight radio waves.
There are numerous posts on this board about the lousy range of the remote units. Check out the archives through the search function here on this BB. You just might be accustomed to having better range that is present in almost any other car out there.
OTOH, from a more personal and selfish interest on my part, if one of your remote units is bad, then I might be interested in it just so as to salvage the battery cover. See my post just above yours re 2001 remote battery cover. Though, if both of your remotes are acting in the same manner, then it is unlikely that you have a bad remote; in that case, it is more likely that your problem lies elsewhere. If one remote is way off and the other functioning satisfactorily, then perhaps there is a problem with one of the units.
