For a given weight placed on a tire, the tire will contact the road with a certain area. You can think of it as the part of the tire that flattens against the pavement to visualize it. If you make the tire wider(laterally), then the contact patch gets wider, but it *also* gets shorter in the longitude direction. The same amount of tire is in contact with the road no matter what size the tire is. Traction remains the same. Any benefit in handling is due to the reduction in sidewall height, not an increase in the amount of tire on the pavement.
My concern about smooth roads is pothole damage, not "ride". Each bit you drop brings wheel damage that much closer and there are plenty of bent alloys around to demonstrate the problem. Personally, I think 17" is too big (too little sidewall) for the Northeastern roads where I live but people keep trying to prove me wrong with 17" and even 18" wheels.
