After talking to Bill Soles at Checkpoint, and to a service mgr. at Braun, I decided to let Dorschel work on the car. Soles had said that the smoke was "normal" and that the turbo would not be replaced --- so I didn't like the drift of his opinion. The guy at Braun seemed helpful but not super informative - sort of a "bring it in and we'll figure it out" thing, so the two round trips to Buffalo did not seem especially worth either Checkpoint or Braun.
Remember that I had already brought up all of the symptoms and TSBs to Dave at Dorschel. After the service was underway, he kept me informed of progress, but his daily report was that they needed to keep the car one more day, until five days later, when they were finally done. The first-day diagnosis was to R/R the turbo and to do the transmission rebuild according to the kit identified in the TSB. Mid-way through, another part was needed for the tranny - and the part needed to be ordered. So it took longer than expected, but the shift problems were improved and no more smoke. (The notchy feel is still somewhat noticeable so the shifting is still not the smoothest I've ever had in a car.) However, within a day after I picked up the car, the engine service light came on, and the system went into limp-home-mode. I took the car back and it was rectified while I waited - the tech had not clamped a portion of the turbo plumbing, so the system boost was leaking out. A simple fix, but it shows an oversight on their part when buttoning up the job during those five days of previous work.
So my conclusion is that the problems were rectified but, as expected, my confidence in the shop is not complete. I suppose I can give Dorschel a "B" but I sure wish I had a dealer service facility nearby that gave "A" level service. I'll be interested in watching this board for any other reports on Dorschel, as I have another 6 months or so on my CSO warranty service contract.
Thanks again to the above posters for their advice.
