Hi Mark - describe your car, year, model, mileage and age of battery. I don't like the sound of it sinking down to 10vdc then coming up, alternator brushes might be worn if you have high miles. As mentioned from others it can't hurt to validate the cables. If you have clip leads for your meter you could connect them on the alternator and start your car and see what you have for voltage. Also measure voltage on Battery clamps compared to Battery terminals to make sure your not dropping and voltage due to resistance. Has the battery light on the dash come on at all while driving. Battery replacement is easy and if it is over 4 years old and not a brand name it could be time.
I went through this not to long ago. Battery was bad based on meter indications. A few months later drove through puddle and alternator died, (160k miles on car).
