I lived in Cambridge MA and like nearly everyone else here it seems, I used to have a 2000 9-3SE and loved it. I had to move out of the country (to an island country that didn't allow Saabs due to size/power), otherwise I would still be driving a 9-3SE today. That said, I recently moved back to Cambridge and am looking to get... a used 9-3SE (although a regular 9-3 would be fine too since it will mostly be my wife driving it).
The main issue I'm having is that my price range is only around $10k, so it seems most all of the cars that I can get with that money would have around 100K miles on them.
This would be a daily driver for my wife, doing very little total miles - maybe 3-10 miles a day on average. (We live right down the street from school, where she would drive to class and back, and then local errands.) We had been using ZipCar, but after using a friend's car during a house sit, she now wants our own.
I will eventually be getting some sort of sport car next year, so this is just a daily driver here that we are looking at.
So:
1) What are some concerns to watch for in a car with that much mileage on it?
2) It is most likely going to be an automatic.
3) What are the common parts that would need replacing around that time, and their cost: new computer screen for the center console, new transmission, etc?
4) What are some good resources for buying one? I have looked at local dealer websites and they actually only appear to have more recent stock - appears to be the new 9-3 body coming off of lease. The better availability appears to be from other states. Is Ebay worth considering? I see that there are some available from users on this site as well - I would assume those are the best of course :)
The main thing I'm seeing is that dealers tend to have them with around 40-60K miles, and they cost closer to $18k. Private owners have them with closer to 100K miles, and they are $7-10k.
I'm open to suggestions and am glad to be coming back to the Saab world.
