I purchased a 2001 9-3 SE Convertible with 119K miles on eBay in September 2005 for $9950. Prior to purchase I had a local Saab dealer run the VIN and the service history looked pretty comprehensive and thorough. While I did not have a pre-purchase inspection, I took advantage of a cheap flight from DC to Syracuse to drive it before signing the paperwork. There were some obvious issues, most notably the car was in need of four tires and a good detailing, but overall it seemed to be in great shape and looked like a good value.
After driving it home I did the following maintenance:
* New set of tires
* Brakes on all four wheels
* Complete set of BG fluid flushes
Cost was ~$1000.
Two days later the AC compressor seized and I had a problem with the 5th bow motor on the top. With some miscellaneous other repairs the bill came to another $1500. The SID was missing a bunch of pixels and the dealer replaced it with a used one for the cost of labor which seemed like a good deal. Since then, however, the car has been a lot of fun to drive with no other maintenance issues. The only other nagging problem is a fuel guage that only registers to the 3/4 full mark when I fill the tank.
I know a handful of people who purchased cars through eBay with no serious issues and would highly recommend it as a way to purchase a car, especially a highline model. There were some private sellers locally, but I really wanted a 2001 or 2002 and my budget generally did not work with what they were asking for a car with 40-70K miles. I also found a bunch of Saabs at used car dealers, but few of them knew anything about Saabs and the cars were generally a POS and scary to drive.
Personally, I feel that this car is worth the $13K that I have invested to date.
