The starter on my 1995 900SE v6 finally gave up the ghost this spring at 215,000. It had been cranking slow for about a year. When it completely failed, tapping it with a long screwdriver from above got it going to get the car home.

Replacing it isn't too hard, but you'll need torx sockets and a wide array of extensions and universal joints. The back bolt is pretty tough to get out, and even harder to get back in. I did mine on my midrise lift, but you could do it under the car with jackstands. I found the insulation to be in bad shape on the end of the battery cable that goes from the starter to the alternator. The wire was in good shape, so I coated it with shrink wrap. Worked really well.

Expect to spend about $150 on the starter for a Bosch rebuild. Installing it took me 45 min, with a moderate ammount of swearing.
