I think the alternator in a saab should last at least 100k miles. Mine failed at 150k in my 900set97. How many miles on your car? Replacing it took some time due to it being located down behind the motor. As mentioned a voltage measurement will tell all. The voltage has to go very low for the battery light to come on, i think below 11vdc. Do you notice a change in head light intensity when you battery light goes on and off. What rpm is you saab at when you see the battery light come on. Depending on mile(s)I would try to rule out the alternator by measuring voltage directly at the terminals present on it. If it measures good there, it is possible to have a resistive cable. My experience with alternators is when they die it is quickly. This is because the brushes to armature are resistive and arcing wipes everything out. Possible you could loosen the Serpentine belt and make sure the alternator feals and sounds smooth.
