No specific reason to reject any 99-2002 9-3, almost identical mechanically, some of the earlier cars still had the T5 vs the later 200-205hp T7 cars, but that's not a big deal.
SE or premium package cars are nicer. The ACC vs the HVAC knobs is actually a reliability improvement as in the cars with knobs the internal heater box mechanism gets stiff and the knobs break when it's the internals that causing the problem, $600 is to fix. The ACC is generally bulletproof and the rest of the SE or premium package stuff, power passenger seat, memeory drivers seat, upgraded stereo subwoofers and amps in the doors and wood dash in earlier models is nice stuff.
All have the same really decent auto with sport mode or the same stick set up.
If you need the ultimate hatchback also consider a 9-5 SportWagon, all the cool people drive SportWagons. More luxury, more practicality, more availible performance, better ride and handling, tighter body structure, all in a package less than a foot longer.
