My ’99 9-3 convertible was hit from behind and totaled in front of my house last week. I am thinking about getting an off-lease convertible with 35-50k miles as a replacement. My question is focused on the sludge risk associated with cars that were subjected to the asinine GM recommendation to change the oil every 10k miles. I can get an extended warranty, which seems like a good idea but a little expensive. I also spoke with my local Saab mechanic and they suggested that it might make sense to spend $600 or so to drop the oil pan and ensure that everything is clean. I plan on keeping this car a long time as I only drive about 7k miles a year.

Any thoughts are appreciated.
