Tim,
I really feel for you. As I mentioned to you in an email after the last time you posted here, I came within an inch of buying that very car. I won an eBay auction just before you did, then backed out of the deal after it became apparent that the eBay ad had misrepresented the car, and that Aaron had abused it.
The next time they listed it, they added some disclaimers about wear and tear, whereas in the ad I responded to, they represented the car as being virtually immaculate. So, as the saying goes: "There, but for the grace of God..."
I know about what you paid for the car, so I'm sorry to say that if you try to sell it busted, you'll be lucky to get $5,000 for it. There was a lengthy thread last week on another Saab board about a '99 Viggen in Kentucky with 62,xxx miles that was selling for $8,000. That car had a number of cosmetic problems, but seemed to run well, and there were two guys lined up to buy it at that price.
In the course of that thread there was a short discussion of options to pursue if that car turned out to have a bad engine. One guy mentioned that in his 900SE, he had swapped in an engine from a 9000 Aero. He bought the engine with 130,000 miles, had it torn down and checked out, replaced bearing inserts, rings, oil pump gears, timing chain, seals, etc, etc, and got the engine back in the car for about $3,000.
That approach could be an option for you. If the whole experience has soured you on that car and you're dead set on getting rid of it, that approach might not save you a bunch of money compared to just trying to find a used Viggen engine. But maybe, if you're open to the idea of keeping the car, you would end up with something that you could drive and enjoy for a few years.
I wish you the very best as you try to sort out the problem.
Best regards,
Dave
