Tim,

I delayed posting a response, because it's such a hard question.

I fear that you're in a tough spot. If you don't have the will (or the means) to fix the car, you're going to take a beating on the price, I'm afraid.

The problem is, with the engine not running, a potential buyer won't be able to determine whether it also needs expensive work on the transmission, suspension, air conditioning or etc etc etc.

Also, it's a problem that you're 1800 miles away from the car, so you're not in a position to show it.

I remember what it was like to be a poverty-stricken student, but I still think your best bet financially would be to get the car running. But I could also understand if, as I mentioned, you just don't have the energy to keep up the fight with this particular car.

Anyway, in your position, if I were absolutely determined to get out, no matter how big the loss, I would first phone the smart guy KB900psi mentioned. I'd probably get the car hauled to the him, ask him to assess the cost of repairs, then see what he'd be willing to pay for the car.

If his offer is enough to salve the pain a bit, take it and don't look back. If it's not, then place an ad here and on the other Saab bulletin boards, and maybe consider an eBay auction as well. Hopefully the mechanic would agree to store the car for a while in hopes that he'd be first in line to get the repair job whenever the car was sold.

Like I said, I really feel for you. Good luck.

Dave
