The leaking CV boot sounds like a potential problem, and definitely something to keep an eye on. It will be due at some point if not now.
If you are concerned and you can tolerate putting your car out of service for a few days, you can dismantle the joint and inspect the condition of the bearings and the bearing races (the joint) to look for wear. If you see wear, then you need to replace parts. There are some posts in the last few months by Michael P showing bearing damage. Let me know if you can't find them in the archives. You will need new grease, clamps, and a new boot. Lots of DIY instructions in the archives and at Dip's site.
Still, I don't know if I would rip into it just yet. The CV is usually a clicking noise. Is the groaning you described rythmic and does it vary with speed? I tend to think of a rumble being wheel bearings; clicking being outer CV joints; and groaning being somethign more like a power steering pump or suspension related parts. (Although the PS pump will groan when the wheel is turned and the car is not even moving.) There are many suspension related parts that can cause various pops, clunks, or maybe even groans. (Strut mounts, ball joints, etc.)
Unfortunately front end noises vary and are not an exact science.... I'm dealing with this right now myself. Car is at the shop. Watch for a post soon. (Although it won't help your problem.)
