Ticking noise might be a noisy Purge Valve.... It could the Purge Valve. This valve allows the fuel vapors from your Evaporative Emission Canister (charcoal canister) to enter the intake manifold so your engine can burn them. The purge valve opens once the engine has warmed up and the intake manifold pressure is low (i.e. at idle). The valve opens and closes to allow the fuel vapors to be drawn in to the intake manifold and burned but not adversely affect the idle speed.
Typically a noisy Purge Valve is noticed by hearing a clicking noise seemingly coming from behind the glove box.
The Purge Valve is located on the passenger side strut tower. It is held on by a rubber ring that attaches to the strut brace. There are two vacuum hoses and an electrical connector attached to the Purge Valve. It is very easy to remove and clean.
I used LPS 1 (similar to WD40) and sprayed it in both of the Purge Valve hose connections. I let it sit for maybe 10 minutes, shook any remaining LPS 1 from the valve and and then repeated the procedure. After draining the Purge Valve the second time, I reinstalled the valve and have not heard the clicking sound again.
Considering a replacement Purge Valve costs $63 from eEuroparts, it is certainly worthwhile to try the cleaning method above before replacing a noisy Purge Valve.
