Annoyed with Saab right now. Basically, I took it in for it’s routine oil change, winter tires, and a failing battery. I also mentioned, like I always do, that it’s losing about a quart a month of oil, and the front end “pops” when it’s cold and pulling out of a parking space.
Got a call, and they said there’s a new and improved crankcase ventilator fix for the oil consumption… $340.
They also discovered a separated motor mount (broken weld)… $445.
My extended warranty expired 2 days before I brought it in. I asked these two items to be covered under the warranty for the following reasons:
I’m the original owner of this 2000 Saab Viggen. It has less than 56k on the odometer, and has always been serviced by the dealership, and hasn’t been in an accident.
I had the pcv crankcase fix done when it first came out due to oil loss. Saab withdrew that repair later, so it was undone. I was never informed a new fix had been issued, and the vehicle had been serviced twice since the new fix had been issued without notifying me there was a new correction tech notice for the problem.
The broken motor mount was a new discovery, that I had no idea existed; nothing odd when driving it except for “popping” noises when pulling out of a parking space (usually a bolt that needs retorqued and has a tech doc for that issue). In my case, this time it’s a failed weld, therefore this shouldn’t be considered wear and tear or maintenance.
The warranty ran out on a Saturday; Even if I had discovered these things, I would not of been able to get it into the shop.
Both symptoms (popping and oil loss) had prior service tickets, and had been “repaired” before under the warranty. This should be considered a continuation of those repairs. Both symptoms began long before the warranty expired… In other words, the parts failed while under warranty.
The dealership told me it was out of their hands and I should take it up with Saab Customer Support. So I did. Two weeks later (while I’m still driving it around), they’ve come back with an offer of covering 50% of the cost. Sorry, but it really torques me these things won’t be covered. With Mercedes, Audi, Nissan and Lexus, I’ve had these sorts of things covered as “goodwill” months outside the warranty. Apparently Saab won’t stand by their own manufacturing defects. Oh yea, I also finally ended up with two bent Viggen wheels too…..(a lawsuit against Saab a few years ago I didn’t participate in).
IMHO, it’s a bad way to attract my business again.
