Hello,
On my way to play hockey last Saturday night, I noticed that my 900SE was howling between shifts (while engine momentarily decelerates) before engaging into another gear. I bailed on the game to save my car from further damage (real or perceived), and our team subsequently lost their goalie for the night,...me.
I don't beleieve that it's the throw-out bearing to the clutch (year old), as at idle with the clutch disengaged I hear nothing different from the bearing. I dressed the aux. belt with WD40, no improvement. Turbo seems to spool up and boost correctly (with no smoking), but am not sure if the howl is coming from the turbo (which has been running well). The howl occurs only with the clutch depressed when upshifting, and doesn't occur when decelerating, while in gear(coming off boost).
The engine does not howl while accelerating or decelerating with no load (while parked). No CELs. Oil pressure light working, off when engine is running.
I had the manual trans fluid changed a week ago by a mechanic as the level and drain plugs were immovable. I noticed leakage from the trans a few days ago and had the mechanic retighten the trans plugs.
Tommorrow morning I will investigate further, but is there anything else to look for? I also plan on replacing the hex key type level and drain plugs of my manual trans. with the hex head type (part number 4776266).
Lastly with the head head type of level and drain trans plugs, should a washer be used? The mechanic that retightened the existing level/drain hex key plugs used washers to keep the hex key plugs from freezing to the trans , and facilitate future removal.
Lastly, is there somewhere else I can troubleshoot the howling while (from motor/trans?) while upshifting, just in case it's not trans related?
Thoughts?
Thanks,
George M.
