You can add small amounts of Auto-Rx with each change in a kind of maintenance mode. When I had some sludge issues in a 1997 2.3, I even drained all the oil and let pure solvent sit in the pan for a couple days. This dissolved some of the sludge but alot still remained. The hard black type of sludge seems to be very resistant to removal. SeaFoam seemed to do a better job of it than most of the other solvents.
