I took my wife's '99 9³ to work a few weeks ago & used the SID to track mpg at various points along the 45 mile (each way) commute. My highest mpg (by the end of the freeway section of the drive) was 43.6, while my total mpg for one direction was 38.4. Of course, as John pointed out, this was driving conservatively: no A/C, 65 mph max on the freeway, coasting (auto tranny) & leaving lots of space to avoid braking whenever possible; basically, all the things you'd do if you were driving a hybrid Insight, Civic or Prius.
Th advantages over the hybrids, of course, are that you've still got around 200hp (when needed), gobs of carrying capacity (when needed), & the comfort & safety of a Saab. The only drawbacks are lower in-town economy & learning that your wife NEVER drives conservatively....
