A friend of a friend used to do that with a highly tuned VW Scirocco. Apparently it worked very well. However, I'm not sure how well that would work in the reltively sludge-prone cars that we have.
IMO, you'd be a penny safe and a pound foolish. You'd be saving about $60 but risking anywhere from $2-$3 grand. I'd keep doing it the old-fashioned way. As the numbers work, you'd better be 50 times as sure that you're right by doing it the 'cheap' way.
