Synthetic oil did come out and was created so you could leave it in the engine longer - in 2000 Saab started using double (10k mile) intervals for oil changes - but even though the oils didn't break down as fast because of the synthetic molecule, it turns out they do sludge up, so while it may be fine in some cars, most that use synthetic now still do 5k changes and use the expanded heat range protection of that oil rather than the increased interval.
Because 00-02 Saab blocks are NOTORIOUS for sludging, I would never go more than 5k with any oil, period.
