Chris,
There is some information on the gauge issue in the archives on this. It's either a sending unit problem or an instrument cluster problem. Problems with the unit are more likely. The gauge is integral with the fuel pump assembly and is held in the tank. It's possible for an impact below the tank to damage the assembly and bend or affect the sending unit arm, leading to faulty readings. (I had this problem--see some of my posts from Dec 05 and Jan 06 in the archives.) You can actually disconnect the wire between the unit and the gauge and throw on a resistor with the right range of ohms to test the integrity of the dash gauge (check other posts in the archives); alternatively, you can check the resistance from your sending unit after you know the level it's supposed to be at.
Not sure about the rushing sound.
