Burnt smell from heater fan?

2002 Saab 9-3SE 118K miles.
I got a fairly strong burnt smell from my heater fan since ~December, just before my balance-drive failure.
Also, the day before the smell, I was on a ~16 hour drive through rain (from Savanna to Detroit...with stops every 3-4 hours.)
a few days before that, the cabin fan stopped working for 1.5 days.
I can smell the burnt smell outside the car as well, but due to the recent weather, I haven't been able to open the hood to pin-point it...
The smell is only noticable with the fan on. recirculate and/or AC on. I get the smell. The stronger the fan, the stronger the smell.
Does that point toward anything? I'm sorried that my car is burning oil somewhere (failing turbo?!) However, if I'm pulling fresh air from the outside, I shouldn't smell it...
The smell is kinda like burnt electric motor, plastic, or potentially oil. (It shouldn't be the DI, because I had that fixed years ago...also, I have had that smell for 3 days total now.)
