By browsing Saabnet I was able to quickly and accurately diagnose a CPS problem.
About a week ago I got a very brief momentary loss a power. Then, on Tuesday morning I did a 6Km trip stopped and after about 15 minutes tried to start the car. Cranked over as usual but did not start. I unplugged the CPS plug by the thermostat and it looked a little corroded and reconnected. Got in the car and started and ran OK until late afternoon when I was returning home over a harbour bridge and the engine cut completely. Luckily I was over the brow of the bridge and was able to coast to an off ramp and get clear of traffic. I then opened the bonnet felt the temp of the CPS – not overly hot. I then decided to use a bottle of water I had in the car and slowly poured it over the sensor. I then got in the car started OK and made it home. Looked at Eeuroparts and CPS 91-772-21 would be $103 NZD landed in NZ but would be take 5-6 days on previous experience. So, to get the car back on the road I rang the local dealer and found they had stock but wait for it at a cost of $301 NZD but to their credit it was delivered to my door in less than 1 1/2 hours. The GM part number given was 5557326 measuring 920 ohms. Was a bit concerned as all the data I have (WIS & Haynes) states 540 ohms. However, I compared both and found both were Bosch P/N 0 261 210 133. So proceeded to install it and all was OK. Today at work I heated the old sensor to approx the heat I experienced in the car and it went open circuit and on cooling back to approx 920 ohms. From what I can deduce is this is the second one fitted to the car so they are averaging about 67,000 kms. You would think they should last longer as it’s not too hot where it is positioned on the block.
