...tuns out that the "exhaust" hissing is the SAI system reacting to bad in-line check valves on the vac hose. That's a relief. Pulled spark plugs: all were intact and uniform w/excellent color (after 40K mi.!) -- I replaced them. Looking in the cylinders through plug hole I saw no signs of piston top scoring; all are nice uniform carbon color. Pulled valve cover and found nothing unusual in there. All chain guides intact and the top guide on valve cover just barely has enough of a wear groove to carch on a fingernail. Took photos for reference.
So I'm still baffled -- if its not in cylinders or under valve cover what woud cause an intermittent loud hammering / clanking like this on cold start?
