Sorry if this is a sloppy thread. I'm 250 mi from home base and was trying to figure this all out before putting another 6hrs runtime on the engine.
2.5 hrs. of digging in old saabnet posts has led me to believe that my 2.3L NA does NOT have a death rattle. The diesel clatter noise is probably oil starvation to sticking lifters brought on by some common engine oil sludge deposit issues. I can clearly imagine that having the lifters whacking back on the cam flats after sticking would give that described nuts and bolts rattle sound!
Feeling much more optimistic about prognosis! I'll need to check my oil pressure warning switch, check oil fill level, and later try to remedy the deposits with treatment/flush or manual sump screen cleaning. I think now is a good time to go with full synthetic oil.
Additional reading hints that my slow cotant leak may even actually be occurring somewhere else instead of head gasket. Darkening of coolant might just be coming through ATF from SAI or radiator. I'm feeling much more optimistic! Can't wait for warmer weather to fix this!
If I'm off base or you have added comments, please post.
