That price is in line with what replacing the stanchion arms will cost at a mechanic.

I had to do it last fall (at 90k miles, but NYC miles!) to pass New York state inspection. Normally that's a job i would DIM (do it myself), but I didn't have the time to round up the part, get access to a press etc. So I just sucked it up and had my mechanic (whom I trust, and who showed me how much excess play the bushings had) do it. It was $400, which included the part ($299 for the lower arm) and an hour of (New York City) labor ($95 an hour), including diagnostic stuff.

I asked him about replacing the bushing and he said their policy is to replace the whole part in cases like that, for liability and warranty purposes (they warranty their work). I couldn't really argue with that, especially since he had my car on the lift and i was a week overdue for my inspection!!

Unfortuntely your mechanic has not fixed the problem completely, but he probably wasn't trying to rip you off.

Re dumping the car: suspension parts wear out on any car, and they're not cheap. In the last year I've replaced struts/mounts, the stanchion arm I mentioned and got new tires and wheels. My 97 900se handles a lot better, and frankly it just feels safer, but I have spent well over $1,000. But again, I live in NYC, so that's the cost of doing business...
