Driver side axle shaft seal leak - advice please.

Hi - sorry- I had posted this is the 9sSS forum accidentally and couldn't find a way to delete it from there...
Looking for some advice...
Took my 99 9-3 in to the local shop for a leak from the driver's side axle... Originally the estimate to replace the axle shaft seals was under $300 for the job.
However, another mechanic at the same shop had the car up on the lift and noticed that the whole axle shaft would wobble and move freely when grabbed and tugged on... Further diagnosis suggests that a bushing that the shaft sits through further into the differential has worn out and should probably be replaced - otherwise any new seals would be toast within 1000 miles.
(incidentally I do have a slight vibration form the front end between 65 and 70 mph)
Now the estimate to try to cut out the bushing and replace it without dropping the tranny is 10 hours labor plus parts for approx $1000 for the job. However - there is no gaurantee that this would work and it may be found that the tranny would need to be dropped and the bushing removed and re-pressed on the bench at an even greater cost of course (as I guess is the Saab suggestion for the job).
What do you think? I have done extensive work on my previous cars, but have no manuals, etc. for the Saab. Can this be a DYI? Is the estimate on target? Anyone else been through this one? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...
thanks
