I thought I had a great car deal, a 1999 9-5 4cyl 2.3 turbo with 84k on the odometer. All was well until at 111k, oil out the tail pipe and a loud pinging, the mechanic over the phone diagnosed, when he dropped the oilpan, he confirmed the engine was wasted...cause....sludge blocking the oil screen causing the engine to dry out and the turbo seal to go. Thank god for that $1000 warranty I almost did not get, they covered the $4k in repairs.(a new engine)

So I was on the road again, a happy 9-5 driver.......until......at 184k the dreaded pinging returned, I called the mechanic, he dropped the oil pan, again I fell victim to the dreaded sludge issue!! How? Why? Again??? I was good about adding Mobil 1 10W30 every 3-4k. I let go up to 5-6K 1 time too many Apparantly this turned out to be the KISS OF DEATH for my beloved 9-5, and if you just purchased a 2007 9-5 with the 4cyl turbo you are at risk!!!
I have done extensive online research and dicovered if you have a car with the sludge issue you should be using 0w40 or 5w30 Amsoil or Mobil 1 only...not 10w30 Mobil 1 like I did.

So now I am in a quandry, the mechanic wants to put me in a 99 9-5 with a turbo V6(Consumer reports did not list this engine as a sludge issue engine) with 170k. I looked at a 1998 Camry only to learn they too have the sludge issue.

So anyone that comes across this article, let me be the lesson, change your oil every 3K with Amsoil or Mobil 1 0w40 or 5w30 and before you buy a used demand the oil pan to be dropped and an internal engine inspection to be performed, further, have the oil screen cleaned every 10k and a pressure test done on the engine and ask for the new screen and vent upgrade.

Good Luck!!
