This was a design change going from 900 to 9-3. I have changed mine twice, once because the idler pulley shredded it at 110K and once because my power steering pump coated it with power steering fluid (160K). The first time its a 1 hour job, just figuring how its routed and how to get at it. By the second time you are in 20 minute territory. I didn't remove the right front wheel or any of the shrouds on the bottom, I just threaded the belt in from up top, but you do have to remove the air cleaner box for sure, that makes access from the top a lot easier. I did it once in the parking lot at work (replaced idler pulley at same time), so I am sure it can be done easily with a minimum of tool in the school parking lot.
PS - Perhaps since your daughter is the genius and you are the "retard" you can ask her to replace the belt so that you can both drive home. ;-)
