I think that's a little alarmist. Sludge cases are pretty rare and nothing to seriously worry about. I've got a 2000 Viggen w/64k. 2 mile commute every day. Massive weather swings too in Colorado. And no sludge problems.
Common issues:
Head bolt torque.
Bent wheels.
Fast wear on slotted disk.
DIC failures on the older style cassettes.
MAF Air sensor.. (lost boost due to out of spec)
Issues I've had over six years with the Viggen not mentioned above:
Oil loss. May be corrected with a crankcase ventilation repair.
Idle pulley grenaded.
Broken welds on the motor mounts.
Main seal failure at tranny.
Bad something or another in the clutch assembly (mtl rattling in 1st & 2nd).
The usual air dam destruction and multiple shattered foglamps (ice country)... get the Saab foglight cover kit though and it's lifetime replacement.
Burnt out headlights.
Other than that, it's run like a champ & only my DIC & idler pulley explosion caused a tow.
