My car has been experienceing strange electrical problems for awhile now. (97 SETC 170kmiles) It had trouble starting when hot so I replaced the CPS, that did nothing so I replaced the starter, while I was at it I got a new DI. That seemed to work but now my dashboard guages (speedo, tach, etc) keep going out while I'm driving, and lately ive had trouble starting it again. They both seem like they may be related to the ACC. In the mornings, when its cool and the ACC is usually producing heat, there is not usually a problem. In the afternoon, my car frequently wont start, unless I turn off the ACC, then it starts without a problem. Same situation with the dash. If the dash goes out it will not come on unless I shut off the ACC. Although sometimes even with the ACC off the dash will shut off, it is less frequent, and it comes back on much quicker. Now I dont know a lot about cars, but I figure there is a drain on the electrical system happening somewhere and I was hoping someon here could point me in the right direction.
My first guess is that the alternator is going bad and so when it recieves the extra jolt from the ACC it just cant take it. But im no mechanic, and I certainly do not want to just pay someone to poke around for several hours just to say, "we aren't sure what happened but its not happening now" and charge me $300, which is exactly what happened to me last summer.
Has anyone heard of something like this? Any ideas? Starting place? Keep in mind that I'm not going to be doing any of the work myself so things like "just poke the electro-sensor with a number 9 hemistasis" is not going to tell me anything, please keep it simple:)
