Engine knocking at low rpm - Where to start for DIY?

Hi, I posted a couple of weeks back about a noise I thought was the timing chain, thanks for the replies. I took the car to the local Saab service center for a look, and the mechanic told me I was having engine knock due to low octane fuel, which is standard 95 octane as sold in Norway. He advised me to try to run it on premium 98 octane and see if the knock decreased. So it did, thankfully ruling out the timing chain. However, the car should be able to run perfectly off 95 octane, so obviously something is wrong. The noise sounds like a rattle and is only audible at revs between approx. 1500 and 2000 when accelerating hard, for example an early shift from 1st to 2nd gear.
The car is a 95 900 4-cylinder with 133 horsepowers, pretty standard engine with distributor and no frills. It's done 150K miles and has had all regular services, thus well cared for.
Is there a way I can diagnose and fix this myself following an online guide if anything exists? I can see a host of potential issues such as the knock sensor, ignition timing, spark plugs etc. Where should I start?
Thanks in advance,
Jimmy S.
