It still has a compression ratio of 10.5
You will need higher octane to allow for better timing and more power in any case.
Are the correct plugs in use? Are they damaged?
Carbon deposits can create hot spots that increase octane demand of the engine. This acquired octane demand can be eliminated with a fuel system cleaner. I have no idea what you would look for there to do this.
