A series of stupid questions regarding ATF on a 2000 9-3 base w/93000 miles. I had the dealer change the ATF at 30k and 60k, and I finished my first drain/fill. I carefully measured how much room temp ATF drained out, and I used a funnel to put that much back in through what I think is the ATD dipstick.

Today I drove it for about 40 minutes at highway speed. I followed the owners manual directions on how to read the dipstick... but I can't get a clear reading. There's ATF all over the thing... I can't see a clear line. THere's ATF all the way up in the part number of the dipstick (i.e., the very top of the yellow part). There are also dry patches here and there. It's nuts.

Here's some easy questions.

1. The ATF drain plug is 24mm and magnetic. The one I pulled was 24mm and magnetic and on what I believe is the tranny and 3.4 quarts of reddish fluid came out. Is there anything else that has a 24mm plug and 3.4 quarts of reddish fluid to drain? I use ATE SuperBlue brake fluid, so I feel pretty sure it wasn't that. Maybe power steering? I want to make sure I drained ATF.

2. The dipstick I am checking (and into which I poured new ATF) is on the front side of the engine. It is yellow. It says "Dexron III" on it. It isn't the oil dipstick (I know which one that is).

3. OK, assuming I drained dirty ATF and properly replaced it with new ATF, then:

A) There was too much ATF in there before I started, or
B) The dipstick just won't have a clear line on it.

The tranny shifts very smoothly. There are no problems. I could tell from the dipstick that the tranny fluid was not foamy.

What is it with Saab and dipsticks, by the way?

Anyway, thanks for all of the help and the hints I have read here that enabled me to change my own ATF rather than pay the dealer $200.
