I replaced rears myself in about 40 min. Last week I had the fronts done at Sears (yeah, took a chance and went for it) and so far so good. Got a sweet deal on the job too. $140 for parts ("strut cartridge" included shocks [Monroe Sensatrac], springs and some hardware), $70 for alignment, and $70 for labor (2 hours[!!!] at $35/hour [special rate]). When he quoted me $280 for the whole job I pulled my best poker face and said "ok, let's do it".
Now, you must be forewarned that many shops will really struggle with this job. For example, Sears had this listed at "standard difficulty" strut job (2 units [hours] of labor). In total it took them over 6 hours to finish it all! If I'm lucky they will have done everything right and my wheel won't come flying off tonight when I put the kayaks on the roof and go camping. I would give most chain auto repair shops (like Sears) about 50-75% chance of getting it right.
