I didn't see a year/model in your post, but when I replaced both of the chains on my '02 93 I did it with the engine in. This is all off the top of my head so I may leave something out.

I loosened all of the engine/transmission mounts and used a bottle jack and 2x4 to move engine toward the drivers side. I lowered the exhaust pipe by unbolting it from the turbo. I loosened the subframe so I could remove the oil pan. I then removed the oil pan and timing cover. Initially, I didn't remove the head which proved to be a disaster. Ultimately, I had to remove the head to get it right. The chain guide that has the tensioner on it passes through the head and it was impossible to replace that guide with the head in place. There is a small idler gear that the timing chain rides on that I couldn't get the bolt loose to remove. The head wasn't cut very deep and I rounded out the Torx pattern. I just left it in place and worked around it.

Overall, the most difficult part of the job was removing the intake manifold from the head. The bolts were impossible to see and it took much contorting of my body to loosen them. Anders recommended to me that I get different 1/4" drive sockets to use and that was good advice. I don't think I could have done it without them. To get the bolts out of the timing cover, I bought a Torx bit of the appropriate size, cut it own and glued it into a 1/4" socket of the appropriate size. I then used a variety of breaker bars to break the bolts loose. Even with the engine moved over there isn't much room to put wrench in there and those bolts need a fair amount of torque to break them loose.
