In our family of 6 SAAB's, we have three 9-3's.
99 SE Conv bought with 52K and now 70 K. Have had NO problems except ELCD purge valve ( common $60 to fix)
99 S bought with 100K. Bought from original owner with ALL service records since day 1. This car looks like it had a lot of repairs. But no problems since purchase.
I hand picked these for my teen daughters and have no extra concerns that they will break down.
01 Viggen 165K. I bought with 150K. Previous owner reported no major repairs, except common things like A/C compressor, Direct Ignition Cassette. Even with this mileage - the car is as tight and rattle free as when new. Except I recently blew the engine- but it was probably my fault.
We have had 81 900 T, 87 900 T, 91 9000 T , 01 9-5, and currently have 03 9-5 aero 85 K , and two 97 9000 Aero's 160 and 180 K. Of all of these- the only really problematic cars were the 81 900 and 91 9000.
We're still relatively new to owning 9-3's. But except for the sludge issues- I don't think they are particularly problematic. Often times a car that had a lot of repair early in it's life will have all the bugs worked out- which is what you are thinking.
good luck
