If you go to the Center for Auto Safety, you'll find 5 engines that are listed as having higher than normal sludge potential.
The Chrysler 2.7 L LH V6
The Saab H Engine B205/235 I4
The Toyota 3.0 L 1MZ V6
The Toyota 5SFE I4
The Volkswagen 1.8t I4
If one is considering purchasing a vehicle with one of these engines that has been maintained in a way that the manufacturer has admitted promotes sludge, then that's more than a little cause for caution.
I agree with you that there's no reason to avoid them like the plague. And I think Saab is an ok brand. I plan on keeping mine for as long as I can. But we should be honest about the faults as well as about the things that are good.
