Hi, need some engine advice with 1999 9-3, 2.0T, 96K mi. -- two issues:
1) ignition falters/hesitates intermittently about 5-10 times per minute -- most noticeable when revving in neutral between 1200-1900 rpm, but it can also be felt with hand on open door at idle. I suspect it is present throughout the rpm range. Vac hoses and spark plugs have been replaced and the red DIC swapped with a known good spare...no changes. There have been no CELs.
2) there is a low to mid-pitch groaning sound that can be faintly heard at idle. It appears to increase in volume with engine speed (loudest at about 2800 rpm) and can be heard while driving and while in neutral. There is not much change in pitch with engine speed, just volume. The noise seems to come from belt side of engine. The idler pully and belt were replaced less than 30K mi. ago. It does not have the distinctive squeaky marble-y sound of my other Saab (2.3NA, noisy water pump).
What should I suspect be the problem(s)? Could this have one assignable cause, like a failing alternator, or could it be two seperate problems, like a failing CPS (ordered one today) combined with an alternator issue? When valve cover was last removed there was only minimal sludging and maybe 3mm timing chain deflection with no visible damage to guides. I know the belt will have to come off to futher diagnose, but does it sound like I could be having early warning of timing or balance chain issues that could turn into a dreaded worn-through front cover?
thanks,
Woody
