I spent most of yesterday tearing apart the car for the heck of it :-) Had a great time!! In the process I discovered that the exhaust side of the turbo has got a fair amount of white deposits built up on it. For lack of better wording, it looks like someone took a power paint sprayer and coated the turbine with white paint...it's rough in appearance and to the touch. There are some pics (bad quality but you can see the white stuff) at http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2712413
There are similar white deposits on the inside of the exhaust side housing itself... however the inside of the header is NOT affected. The o2 sensor has similar deposits on it, but not as bad as the turbine. The deposits come off with wire brushing.
Car is a 2000 Viggen with 110k and a few minor upgrades ... 3" DP & MP intercooler are the only things I've done to the intake/exhaust as yet. It's had the requisite oil and spark plug changes, etc etc. There seems to be a small amount of left-right (as mounted on car) play in the shaft, but then again I've never had a turbo apart before so I have no frame of reference on if that is normal or not.
So...what is the white stuff?? Is it normal?? Am I leaking coolant in there or something?? I already ordered a rebuild kit because I figured it would be a good idea since I have it all apart already, but is this buildup being caused by something more serious than just worn seals??
Also if someone wants to point me in the direction of a TD04 rebuild DIY guide it would be appreciated!!! Otherwise I will take pics and post a writeup as I go along...
Thanks for any help!! - Peter
