At 80k miles my 1999 base had terrible handling. The wheels felt like they were falling off when going over railroad tracks. But then I drove some bad logging roads at higher than recommended speeds seeking moutain biking trails. Replacing the struts made all the difference in the world - even with cheap Monroes (I couldn't justify the cost of Konis). The front end shouldn't feel soft at all when pushing down on the bumper and releasing; and even if there is no apparent bouncing on the rebound the struts still can be worn. The lower control arm bushing(s) may also be shot (i.e., lost it's oil), and was the reason why my car couldn't keep a straight line on uneven road surfaces.
