I think FWD is better unless you plan to do steep hill climbs in deep snow. FWD has alot of advantages: better gas mileage, fewer parts to break or to wear out, much easier to learn to control in slick conditions, less weight, more efficient drive train, more interior room (no tunnel).
I think gas mileage is a big one. Many of the turbo Saabs get rediculous gas mileage for the power output. You can easily get 32MPG on the freeway going 75+ and even 35MPG if you resist the urge to pass people at WOT. The equivalent Subaru is lucky to get high 20s MPG for a similar engine. I think only the 175HP Subaru legacy can even get 30MPG on the freeway. It doesn't require premium gas so $/mile might be similar to Saab.
To be fair, a Subaru is probably going to be more reliable than a Saab, but once you go down that road, you might as well jump to a Honda or Toyota. I'd never bother, because their sytling turns me off. Where I live, every 4th car is a Subaru, they all look the same, yuck...
Tell your wife to give the 9-3 a chance for one winter. Get some serious studless snow tires (narrow is better, generally, go for blizzak) and you'll probably be fine. I do have to ask, do you have traction control? If not, that will hurt you a bit...
