Yeah, Subarus really are that rugged. They're everywhere in the Colorado mountains. It may not look like it but they actually have as much or more clearance than most sport utes. The differential is the buggaboo on most sport utes and the Subbies have them tucked up out of harms way. They are tough little soma-bucks. Another alternative might be to keep the Saab and get an older Land Cruiser/ 4 Runner/Land Rover Discovery as a winter beater/off road vehicle. $4-5K would put you in a good one and the Discovery would give you the most bang for the buck, if you don't might a little tinkering.
