If you really want to get something that can go in the snow look for vehicles with AWD/4WD and limited-slip and/or locking differentials. AWD is pretty neat, but depending upon the traction management it may not help you too much sometimes.
Tires make a huge difference like everyone has written, but if you're in a tough situation and you're comparing a 2WD car with good tires to an AWD with good tires, AWD is better than 2WD, period. AWD isn't magic though.
Most people don't have enough adventure in them to really see the difference. It's kind of like skis. Everyone raves about how the new style parabolic skis help them turn better, but the truth is that very few people work the skis hard enough to tell the difference between the old straight designs and the new curvy ones... Most sane people won't see the benefit of AWD becuase they're smart enough not to be driving at times they'd need it. :)
Subbies are great machines, but if it were me moving there I'd keep the Saab and also get an old truck or SUV (with at least a limited slip/posi rear and a real dual range transfer case) to keep around for hauling things on the weekends, towing an occasional trailer, off road duty, and to use in the snow if you really had to get someplace...maybe an old 4Runner, Power Wagon, or Discovery, a real genuine old school 12 mpg body on frame machine. RWD/AWD do the best parking lot donuts too, you could be a mad tyte drifter.
Good luck with the move and your decision!
