Hey John
I can honestly say I NEVER got stuck w/my 85 with all season tires in the past 7 New England winters I've had it. I even drove my Viggen w/summer tires (I know, smart right?) in the winter a few times and while it's more of a challenge, I never got 'stuck.' I really, really enjoyed a buddies tuned WRX (230 all-wheel hp, ~275 crank), but man was it a crap car. Horrible interior, awful reliability (turbo went at 20k), poor paint and panel fitment, and he only managed 25mpg when babying it. If your wife is dead set on AWD, wait until the 08 9-3 w/haldex XWD, at least you'll have slightly better highway mpg (since I believe it can shift most of the power to the front) and decent build quality.
Have a great weekend
