I have had 2 900s (one an 86 turbo, one a 97 turbo), and 2 Subarus (86 4WD, 2007 AWD).
I was very loyal to Saabs until I got my new Subaru (Spec.B). The car has a tremendous amount of power, fantastic AWD with a Torsen LSD rear and traction/stability control on all wheels. The build quality is equal to or better than either of the Saabs (I still have the 97, and I expect reliability to be much better as well.
I was able to get around fine on Bridgestone RE050A "maximum summer performance" tires during a snowstorm last winter. Do I recommend this? No. Get some good all season performance tires (like RE960AS) or dedicated snows, but the car's AWD rocks.
I also drove my dad's 2003 Outback through some very harsh conditions a few years ago (on all seasons) and could not believe how stable and tractable the car was.
Ans, as far as the comment that Subarus are lacking equipment: true no HID (except STI) or rainsensing wipers, but I do have heated seats, very functional ACC, more info than my SID could ever provide (I've got nav which includes a lot of trick info), and projector beam headlamps that are awesome.
Look at Subaru's crash test ratings of late. The Legacy, Tribeca, and Forester are all at the top of their category.
To me, Subaru is the new Saab. Makers of well built, fun to drive, very safe cars. I have been permanently converted.
