I have been an owner of 5 Subarus and 2 SAABs. I can tell you from my extensive experience that the SAABs are MUCH better in the snow. As a matter of fact, my old 1986 900 was better in snow with bald all season tires vs. 1998 Subaru with AWD and good SNOW tires. My NG900 is also excellent in snow. Yes, it will slide around, but you NEVER lose control, you always feel in charge. All the AWD Subarus I have owned have been next to impossible to drive in snow when equipped with all season tires. They were pretty good with good snow tires, though. Not as good as my SAABs, mind you. My front wheel drive Subaru is great in snow, much better than AWD. Also, I had a 4WD Subaru with on-demand 4WD (button on the gear shift lever) that was excellent at low speed even in very deep snow but pretty scary on a slippery highway.
When it snowed my wife refused to drive the AWD Subies if our SAAB was available. AWD is great for not getting stuck but not so great for not getting sideways once you are driving.
