I have been having a persistent stalling problem with my 1998 900S. At first I thought it was my ignition switch because of some other symptoms, such as headlights not shutting off and key getting stuck in the lock. I disassembled the center console and discovered that my ignition switch had become unbolted and was hanging by a thread of a single bolt -- the other bolt actually fell out and was rolling around on the floor. I still replaced the switch and most of my problems went away. Except for the intermittent stalling. The stalling was getting more frequent and sometimes I could not restart the car for an extended period of time.
Thanks to some pointers I received on SAABNET, I finally fixed the problem by replacing the crankshaft position sensor. I cannot fathom what could possibly go wrong with a simple inductive magnet -- it is just basic physics after all. When you have metal teeth passing through magnetic field you get potential across the poles. I can't see how these things can go bad. But they do :(
It was very tough to remove the sensor due to the internal torx configuration of the bolt (T-30). I immediately stripped the bolt head, even though I was using an impact screwdriver that has always worked for me before. I tried to use a bolt extractor but broke it off inside the bolt. I was finally able to cut a slot for a flat screwdriver using a Dremel cutter. Then I used my trusty impact screwdriver to remove the stuck bolt. I made sure to use a normal hex bolt when I installed the new sensor. What were those SAAB engineers thinking?!!
The car runs great once again! I thank everyone who has replied to my earlier posts on this issue!
