Checked my tensioner and it is extended to 15mm. I noticed some rather loud rattling coming from the engine which prompted me to check the tensioner thanks to the posts on this board. So now I know I need a new timing chain but was hoping on some suggestions. I will be removing the balance chain set up since it seems unnecessary. Here are some questions.

1) Can I just run in a new chain and change the top tensioner? Or is that a very bad gamble? I know a proper job would require changing all the guides but I'm a little reluctant to tear apart the front of the engine.

2) Can I change the upper sprockets without taking of the timing cover and should I bother changing them if I can't also change the bottom crank sprocket?

3) If I do it the right way and pull the timing cover do I have to remove the balance sprockets if I remove the balance chain or can I leave them in there?

I am hoping to get another 20k out of the car it's a 96 900set with 148k. I do a lot of stop and go city driving.

Sorry for the convoluted questions and any advise would be greatly appreciated.
