Soft Top Failure message

2002 SE 'vert. Whenever I drop the top, it goes about a third of the way back, slows down, then gives the soft top failure message. If I release the switch, then push it back again, the top jerks forward a few inches then completes the journey back into the body. Once in a while it again stalls when it's almost completely stacked in the back -- same method gets it moving again. No problems coming back up. I've only had the car a few weeks, and it's done this since I got it without getting worse (or better). The only relevant related info I can think of is that the headliner is disconnected from the rear two bows of the top, so maybe it's sensing the headliner folding wrong or something? Which of course raises the related question of whether anyone knows whether it's possible to have the headliner reattached, or if it'll have to be replaced (eventually). Thanks in advance for any help.
